PRP Instructions
1. Medications
- Do not take any NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs) such as ibuprofen, naproxen, meloxicam, diclofenac, etc. as well as oral steroids for 1 week before the injection and for 2 weeks after. These can decrease the efficacy of your injection. Take tylenol as needed.
2. Activity
- For 2 weeks after the injection, avoid high impact activities like running, jumping, throwing, or lifting heavy objects. You can start physical therapy or a home exercise program within 2-3 days of the injection.
3. Eating and Drinking
- Stay hydrated the day before and the morning of the procedure. We recommend drinking at least 16 oz of water and eating something before you come to the office. Bring a water bottle with you.
4. Athlete Protocol
- Wear comfortable clothing which you can exercise in. You will do a short workout to increase your heart rate prior the blood draw.
5. Procedure Expectations
- Your blood will be drawn in office and then spun in a centrifuge for 10 minutes to separate the plasma. The plasma will then be injected into the joint or injured tissue.
6. Driving
- You can drive yourself to and from the injection. If you tend to get lightheaded from blood or injections, or if you are having injections in both lower extremities (knees, hips, etc), you may want someone to drive you home.
